Strategy

Izzet prowess tempo, rebuilt around the two-drop slot after the August 2026 ban. The plan is simple and fast: land a prowess threat on turn two, then chain cheap instants to grow it and burn the opponent out before they stabilise. Stormcatch Mentor is the keystone four-of — haste, prowess, and a Goblin-Electromancer discount that makes every instant and sorcery a tempo profit. Firebending Student and Heartfire Immolator fill out the two-slot with prowess plus reach, and Iguana Parrot is the marquee evasive three-drop with flying, vigilance, and prowess. Ty Lee, Chi Blocker is the flexible insurance piece: flash prowess that taps a blocker or attacker down on the way in. Ral, Crackling Wit is the apex payoff, gaining loyalty off every noncreature spell, printing prowess Otters, and refilling the hand, with a storm-emblem ultimate that simply ends games. The interaction suite is all cheap instant-speed prowess fuel that doubles as removal and reach: Burst Lightning (kicker scales it late), Lightning Strike, Slick Sequence (two damage that replaces itself once you have cast a spell), Torch the Tower (exile plus scry), and Abrade for artifacts. Opt smooths the draw and triggers prowess for a single blue. The manabase was rebuilt in the same pass: 22 lands at 14 blue and 14 red sources — Steam Vents, a single Restless Spire as a creature-land and flood outlet, one Thundering Falls, and a heavy basic count — which meets the Karsten requirement for every cost in the deck while keeping taplands to two.

Upgrade path

Rebuilt 2026-08-10 after Stormchaser’s Talent was banned in Standard. ZERO rare/mythic crafts — cost is 4 uncommon wildcards (Slick Sequence x2, 4th Stormcatch Mentor, 4th Heartfire Immolator). The previous note was stale in three places: Ral, Crackling Wit is OWNED x2 (it billed 2 mythic crafts — there are now zero), Steam Vents is own4 (not own1), and Stormchaser’s Talent was own4. The ban repair was combined with fixing a genuinely broken manabase: the deck ran 18 lands against a Karsten target of ~22, at 12 blue / 11 red. Four weak spells (Lightshell Duo x2, Chart a Course, Otterball Antics) became four lands, reaching 22 at 14 blue / 14 red with only 2 taplands — using the already-OWNED Thundering Falls rather than crafting Riverpyre Verge. Kaito, Cunning Infiltrator was cut as uncastable on curve ({1}{U}{U} on turn 3 wants 18 blue sources). NOTE for a future pass: Riverpyre Verge is NOT in gate_deck.py’s APPROVED_RARE_LANDS despite the land revamp having crafted it — adding it is a deliberate policy decision, not something to slip into a ban repair.

Sideboard

A 15-card sideboard for best-of-three (Traditional) play — swap these in game 2/3 against the matchups below.

Izzet prowess is the beatdown vs midrange and the tempo deck vs aggro. The board splits into a counter suite for the grindy matchups, flexible exile removal, and go-wide insurance.

vs Mono-Red Aggro / Gruul / Boros: +2 Scorching Dragonfire, +2 Abrade, +1 Slagstorm, +1 Rooftop Percher / -2 Opt, -1 Opt, -1 Opt, -1 Abrade, -1 Ral, Crackling Wit. Scorching Dragonfire exiles Screaming Nemesis so its damage-punish never triggers; Abrade mops up early creatures; Slagstorm is the panic button vs a flooded board (cast it when you’re behind, not when you’re ahead of your own prowess team); Rooftop Percher buys life to stabilize a race.

vs Dimir Midrange: +2 Negate, +2 Spell Pierce, +2 Zuko’s Exile, +1 Disdainful Stroke / -2 Slick Sequence-ish dead removal (trim to your worst burn), -3 excess reactive burn, -1 Torch the Tower, -1 Abrade-slot. Zuko’s Exile permanently answers Enduring Curiosity; Negate/Spell Pierce protect your threats from spot removal and counter Kaito; Disdainful Stroke stops top-end. You are the aggressor here.

vs Golgari Midrange: +2 Zuko’s Exile, +1 Disdainful Stroke, +2 Negate, +1 Abrade / -2 weakest burn, -2 Opt, -1 Opt, -1 Abrade. Zuko’s Exile kills Unholy Annex and exiles recursive/Glissa threats; Negate counters removal and ramp payoffs; race under their clunky top end.

vs Zur Domain / Mono-White engines: +2 Annul, +2 Negate, +1 Disdainful Stroke, +2 Zuko’s Exile / -2 Opt, -1 Opt, -2 slow burn, -1 Torch the Tower. Annul counters the enchantment ramp and engine pieces on the cheap; Disdainful Stroke and Negate answer the Overlord payoffs; keep the clock fast.

vs Jeskai Convoke / Mono-White Tokens: +1 Slagstorm, +2 Scorching Dragonfire, +2 Abrade / -2 Opt, -1 Opt, -1 Opt, -1 Ral. Slagstorm is your sweeper vs go-wide; cheap exile removal picks off Knight-Errant refills.

vs Azorius Oculus: +1 Rooftop Percher, +2 Annul, +2 Scorching Dragonfire / -2 Opt, -1 Opt, -2 slow cards. Rooftop Percher exiles reanimator fuel and gains life; Annul counters the graveyard enablers; Scorching Dragonfire exiles Abhorrent Oculus.
