Strategy

Curve out with hasty one-drops, then snowball a tight burn package sideways and at the dome. Fanatical Firebrand and Ghitu Lavarunner pressure turn one (Lavarunner flips on as soon as two instants/sorceries hit the yard, which happens fast with 16 spells); Frenzied Goblin taxes blockers so the team keeps connecting. The engine is the spell-payoff core — Firebending Student (prowess + firebending equal to its power), Heartfire Immolator (prowess + sac-for-removal), and Boar-q-pine (now 3-of, gets a permanent +1/+1 counter on EVERY noncreature spell) all balloon off the burn. Ancestral Anger is the glue: a one-mana cantrip that triggers all three payoffs, grants trample to punch through chumps, and replaces itself so it never dilutes the burn count. Reach is all face-capable — Burst Lightning (kicker for 4 late), Lightning Strike, Shock, and Plasma Bolt (a one-mana 2-to-the-face that becomes 3 whenever a permanent left play or a spell warped that turn). Mulligan toward a one-drop and two lands; be attacking by turn two and finish with burn, not chump-trades.

Upgrade path

Zero rare/mythic SPELL crafts — unchanged constraint honored. The only rare card in the 60 is Firebending Student, which Mik OWNS 4 copies of (no craft); it’s a prowess/firebending two-drop that is a genuine aggro engine, not filler. Lands are owned-only: 20 Mountain + 1 Rockface Village (owned uncommon) + 2 Fire Nation Palace (owned rare land that taps for R and can hand a creature firebending 4 as a late finisher). No shockland needed in a mono-color deck. CHANGES this pass: (1) Corrected a misread in the prior build — Plasma Bolt reads “deals 2 damage to ANY target” (3 with Void), so it is face-capable one-mana reach, not creature-only; added 2. (2) Added 3 Ancestral Anger — a one-mana trample-pump cantrip that triggers Firebending Student / Heartfire Immolator / Boar-q-pine and draws a card, so it powers the engine without thinning the burn. (3) Bumped Boar-q-pine 23 (owned 4, common) to lean into the 16-spell payoff count. (4) Cut Flame-Chain Mauler (2 vanilla bodies that neither trigger nor benefit from the spell engine) and Tweeze (slowest reach at 3 mana; Lightning Strike does the same 3-to-anything a mana cheaper). Trimmed one Mountain to 23 lands since the curve tops at 3. Held back on purpose, same as before: Howlsquad Heavy (owned rare, thin goblin synergy), Slagstorm / Season of the Bold (owned but anti-synergistic sweeps for an aggro plan), and creature-only burn like Scorching Dragonfire, Cinder Strike, Torch the Tower, and Firebending Lesson in favor of face-capable reach.

Sideboard

A 15-card sideboard for best-of-three (Traditional) play — swap these in game 2/3 against the matchups below.

Mono-Red is the aggressor game 1, so the board is built to (a) exile the threats that punish burn, (b) answer the enchantment engines that dominate this meta, and (c) grind harder against midrange. Every card hits multiple archetypes.

vs Mono-Red / Gruul / Boros (aggro mirrors): +2 Scorching Dragonfire, +1 Instant Ramen, +2 Rooftop Percher / -3 Ancestral Anger, -2 Fated Firepower. Scorching Dragonfire exiles Screaming Nemesis (never point damage-based removal at it), Heartfire Hero, and Emberheart Challenger. Ramen + Percher buy life and a flying blocker to win the race; pump/reach spells that only help the beatdown come out.

vs Dimir Midrange: +3 Fiery Annihilation, +3 Zuko’s Exile, +2 Tweeze / -3 Shock, -2 Fated Firepower, -3 Frenzied Goblin. Zuko’s Exile answers Enduring Curiosity; Fiery Annihilation exiles their fliers and big blockers; Tweeze is reach that replaces itself so 1-for-1 removal doesn’t strand you. Weak point-removal and the easily-blanked Goblin come out.

vs Golgari Midrange: +3 Fiery Annihilation, +2 Zuko’s Exile, +2 Tweeze / -3 Shock, -2 Fated Firepower, -2 Frenzied Goblin. Zuko’s Exile kills Unholy Annex, Fiery Annihilation (5 dmg, exile) handles Glissa Sunslayer and their fat, Tweeze keeps cards flowing over the top.

vs Zur Domain / Mono-White engines: +3 Zuko’s Exile, +2 Iroh’s Demonstration / -3 Shock, -2 Fated Firepower. Zuko’s Exile blows up the Overlord/Talent/Innocence enchantments; Iroh’s Demonstration sweeps go-wide token boards.

vs Jeskai Convoke: +2 Iroh’s Demonstration, +2 Scorching Dragonfire, +1 Instant Ramen / -3 Ancestral Anger, -2 Fated Firepower. Iroh’s is a 1-damage mini-sweeper vs the token swarm (or 4 to Knight-Errant); Ramen offsets the go-wide clock.

vs Azorius Oculus: +2 Rooftop Percher, +3 Fiery Annihilation / -3 Frenzied Goblin, -2 Ancestral Anger. Percher exiles two graveyard cards, gains 3, and leaves a flier; Fiery Annihilation exiles Abhorrent Oculus so it can’t recur.
