The printed text matches the assignment scout’s paraphrase: Gnostro is a repeatable, modal tap engine where X scales with how many spells you’ve already cast this turn. Because this is a low-curve spellslinger shell, casting 2-4 cheap instants/sorceries per turn turns Gnostro into a flexible removal cannon (deal X to a creature), a life-buffer engine (gain X), or a card-selection engine (scry X) — every single turn, for free, at instant speed (it just needs to be untapped). commander_oracle_ok = true.
Gameplan
A grindy Jeskai control deck that wins by inevitability, not by drawing into a single wrath. The plan:
- Land + a mana rock early, hit the colors, and start chaining cheap cantrips (Opt, Consider, Preordain, Ponder) and reactive interaction.
- Resolve Gnostro. From then on, every turn you cast a couple of spells first, then tap him to ping a problematic creature, gain a stack of life to ice the aggro race, or scry to set up your next answers.
- The spellslinger payoffs convert the same cheap spells into a board and a clock: Murmuring Mystic spits out a flying Bird every time you cast an instant/sorcery, Guttersnipe and Thermo-Alchemist turn each cast into reach damage to all opponents, and Aven Wind Mage / Kiln Fiend / Jeskai Elder push prowess-style damage.
- You grind every opponent out of resources with cantrip card-advantage while your life total floats out of burn/aggro range, then close with the Bird armada + repeatable pings.
Key synergy lines
- Cast-count stacking: Cantrips that replace themselves (Opt, Consider, Preordain, Ponder, Defiant Strike) cost you nothing net but pump Gnostro’s X and trigger every spellslinger payoff. Casting three one-mana cantrips before tapping Gnostro = a 3-damage ping or +3 life, plus three Bird tokens off Murmuring Mystic, plus 6 damage from Guttersnipe.
- Thermo-Alchemist loop: Thermo untaps whenever you cast an instant/sorcery, so a turn with several cheap spells lets it ping multiple times — pure inevitability against a stalled board.
- Gnostro as removal sink: You rarely need to spend a burn spell on a midrange creature; cast a cantrip or two and let Gnostro’s ping mode handle it for free, saving the burn for face damage or bigger threats.
- Lifegain wall: Gnostro’s gain-X mode plus Pristine Talisman, Radiant Fountain, Tranquil Cove, Swiftwater Cliffs, Sacred Cat (lifelink) keeps you out of burn range while you set up.

- Card advantage / selection — 13. Opt, Consider, Preordain, Ponder, Strategic Planning, Defiant Strike, Augur of Bolas, Winged Words, Pursue the Past, Divination, Pearl of Wisdom, Field Research, Secrets of the Golden City.

Manabase / fixing note
~19 fixing sources (Perilous Landscape tri-land, 3 guildgates, the WUR dual-tapland cycle, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Crystal Grotto, Prophetic Prism, and 9 color-fixing rocks) make all three colors reliably castable; double-pipped cards are kept light (Counterspell is the only ) to respect the common-fixing ceiling.
Pilot notes
- Mulligan for 2+ lands and a rock or a cantrip. You want to be casting spells by turn 2-3.
- Sequence cheap spells before tapping Gnostro each turn to maximize X.
- Don’t over-commit creatures into open mana; this deck wins on attrition, so hold counters for the threats that actually beat you.
- Gnostro’s ping is sorcery-speed-irrelevant — leave him untapped on opponents’ turns so you can react, then ping at the end of your spell sequence.
- Murmuring Mystic resolving is often game-defining: protect it.
Weaknesses
- Enchantment/artifact removal is thin at common in these colors — Makeshift Binding/Citizen’s Arrest can’t be recurred, and resolved problem permanents (big enchantments) are hard to answer.
- No true board wipe — the three “wipes” only clear small creatures; a wide go-wide deck with 3+ toughness bodies races us.
- Commander-dependent tempo: if Gnostro keeps getting killed, the free ping/lifegain inevitability stalls and the deck leans entirely on the fragile payoff creatures.
