Commander
Chulane, Teller of Tales — Legendary Creature — Human Druid (3/4)
Vigilance Whenever you cast a creature spell, draw a card, then you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield. , : Return target creature you control to its owner’s hand.
The printed text matches the scout’s paraphrase exactly. Every creature you cast draws a card and ramps a land out of your hand — so cheap bodies fuel themselves. The activated ability bounces your own creatures (note: “creature you control,” not any creature), letting you re-buy ETB triggers from your value creatures on demand.
Gameplan
Vomit cheap ETB creatures. Each cast off Chulane refunds itself with a card and a land drop, so you never run out of gas and your lands outpace the table. Land-fetch creatures (Coiling Oracle, Farhaven Elf, the Rampers) both ramp and trigger Chulane, so a single creature can net 2-3 cards/lands of advantage. Once you’re flooded with mana and cards, you grind the table out with an oversized board, recurring ETB value, and evasive flyers, closing on raw inevitability rather than a single combo.
Key synergy lines
- Bounce engine: Whitemane Lion / Kor Skyfisher / Cloud of Faeries / Ghostly Flicker / Displace re-trigger your ETB creatures (Mulldrifter, Sea Gate Oracle, Man-o’-War, the land-fetchers). Each re-cast off a returned creature is another Chulane draw + land drop.
- Chulane’s , ability untaps nothing but lets you pick up Man-o’-War to bounce a blocker again, or rescue an ETB creature in response to removal — then recast it for more value.
- Cloud of Faeries untaps two lands on ETB, effectively free, and flickers for more.
- Land-fetch ramp doubles as fixing: Cultivate / Kodama’s Reach / Farseek / Springbloom Druid / Coiling Oracle keep the three colors online while feeding Chulane.
Role breakdown (with counts)
- Lands — 37 (17 fixing nonbasics + 20 basics: 8 Forest / 7 Island / 5 Plains)
- Ramp / mana fixing — 18 (land-fetch creatures, mana rocks, ramp sorceries; many double as Chulane triggers)
- Card advantage / draw — 11 (Mulldrifter, Sea Gate Oracle, Cloudkin Seer, Elvish Visionary, Augury Owl, Skyscanner, Faerie Mechanist, Wavesifter, Divination, Behold the Multiverse, Deep Analysis, plus cantrip-dorks)
- Spot removal / interaction — 11 (bounce: Man-o’-War, Unsummon, Into the Roil, Blink of an Eye; pacify/exile: Pacifism, Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring, Banishing Light, Reprobation, Capture Sphere, Settle Beyond Reality, Plummet; counters: Negate, Essence Scatter)
- Mass/pseudo-wipe — 0 (Bant has no common board wipe; compensated with extra interaction, repeatable bounce, Stonehorn Dignitary combat denial, and a board-stall inevitability plan)
- Payoffs / bodies — the flyers (Cloudkin Seer, Skyscanner, Faerie Mechanist, Wavesifter, Phantom-tier), walls (Penumbra Spider, Crocanura) and the ETB engine itself
Manabase / fixing note
37 lands: a true WUG triland-cycler (Tranquil Landscape), Command Tower / Path of Ancestry / Cryptic Spires / Crystal Grotto / Uncharted Haven any-color taplands, three guildgates + two gainlands, Vibrant Cityscape/Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic/Terminal Moraine/Ash Barrens fetches, plus 6 mana rocks and ~8 green land-fetch effects — well over 20 sources that fix toward all three colors.
Pilot notes
- Lead on a fixer or cheap dork, deploy Chulane turn 4-5, then chain creatures. Sequence land-fetch creatures after Chulane is out so you bank the extra land drop.
- Hold a bounce creature (Whitemane Lion / Cloud of Faeries) to dodge spot removal on Chulane — flicker value while you’re at it.
- Man-o’-War + Chulane’s bounce = a soft Time Walk on a key blocker each turn.
- Don’t over-extend into a potential wrath; you rebuild faster than anyone at the table, so play to the long game.
Weaknesses
- No board wipe. A wide aggro start or a resolved enchantment you can’t answer (Reprobation/O-Ring are your only enchantment outs are limited) can race you. Lean on Stonehorn Dignitary, walls, and Spore Frog to buy time.
- Chulane is the engine. Heavy commander hate slows you; the bounce-creatures and counters are your insurance.
- Grindy and slow against a fast combo deck — the interaction suite (counters + bounce) is the only disruption.
Win condition
Out-value and out-tempo the table with a relentless ETB/card-and-land engine, then close with an oversized board of evasive flyers; inevitability via never running out of gas, not a single combo.
