The Commander’s Real Ability (quoted)
Whenever Pantlaza or another Dinosaur you control enters, you may discover X, where X is that creature’s toughness. Do this only once each turn. (Exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card with that mana value or less. Cast it without paying its mana cost or put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom in a random order.)
The load-bearing detail is X = the entering Dinosaur’s TOUGHNESS, and it triggers only once per turn. That single fact drives the whole build: a 9/9 Ancient Brontodon discovers 9 (casting basically anything in the deck for free); a 1/1 Nest Robber discovers 1. So the deck is intentionally weighted toward high-toughness Dinosaurs as the entering creature, while keeping a cheap curve so the once-per-turn trigger fires every turn. commander_oracle_ok = true.
Gameplan
Ramp into Pantlaza on turn 3-4, then drop a Dinosaur every turn. Each ETB discovers off the top — and because nearly every nonland card here costs ≤6, even a mid-size dino (toughness 4-5) reliably hits a free spell, while the top end (Brontodon 9/9, Dreadmaw 6/6, Looming Altisaur 1/7) discovers deep enough to free-cast another fat dino, which itself can’t re-trigger that turn but lands a body that triggers next turn. The result is a self-perpetuating value chain: every discovered dino is a future discover. You out-card and out-board the table, then close with a wide, trampling Naya beatdown (Crash Through gives the whole team trample for the alpha strike).
Key Synergy Lines
- Toughness = discover depth. Looming Altisaur (1/7) discovers 7, Colossal Dreadmaw (6/6) discovers 6, Prehistoric Turtlesaurus (4/5) discovers 5, Ancient Brontodon (9/9) discovers 9, Soaring Sandwing (3/5) discovers 5 — each turning one ETB into a free fat spell. Cast that free dino on a later turn and it discovers again. (Lead with the highest-toughness body when you have a choice; Looming Altisaur’s 7 is one of the deepest hits in the deck.)
- Free-cast respects the once-per-turn clock, so chain across turns. Discovering a creature on each of your turns keeps the engine humming without flooding a single turn.
- Cycling/landcycling dinos (Imposing Vantasaur, Migrating Ketradon, Savage Land Dinosaur, Balamb T-Rexaur) smooth draws early and become discover fuel late.
- Token/value ETBs (Nurturing Bristleback makes a 3/3 dino → extra body; Cavern Stomper scrys 2 to set up the next discover; Pathfinding Axejaw explores).
- Fight/bite removal scales with the fat board — Bite Down, Ram Through, Prizefight let a 9/9 Brontodon snipe anything for ~1 mana.
Role Breakdown (with counts)
- Lands — 36: 23 nonbasic fixing lands + 13 basics (5 Mountain, 5 Forest, 3 Plains).
- Ramp / fixing — 11: Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Grow from the Ashes, Farseek, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Arcane Signet, Commander’s Sphere, Manalith, Sphere of the Suns, Prophetic Prism, Golden Egg. (Most also fix all three colors.)
- Card advantage — 8: Commune with Dinosaurs, Citanul Woodreaders (kicked), Pursue the Past, Big Score, Seize the Spoils, Electric Revelation, Thrill of Possibility, Crash Through. Slightly under the 9-11 band on dedicated spells, but the discover engine is a genuine repeatable card-advantage motor on top of this count and reliably papers over the gap once Pantlaza is online.
- Spot removal / interaction — 9: Lightning Bolt, Galvanic Blast, Torch the Tower, Abrade, Fire Prophecy, Generous Gift, Prizefight, Ram Through, Bite Down.
- Mass / pseudo-wipe — 2: Sulfurous Blast (3 to each creature+player at sorcery speed), Swirling Sandstorm (5 to each non-flyer with threshold). Both are asymmetric-ish — our dinos are big and survive; small mana-dork/aggro boards get swept.
- Payoffs / dino bodies — 26: the Dinosaur curve from Snubhorn Sentry up to Ancient Brontodon, biased to high toughness for deep discovers.
Manabase / Fixing Note
~22 fixing sources across lands+rocks+ramp: a true Naya tri-land (Sheltering Landscape, Tinder Farm), Path of Ancestry, Naya Panorama, three guildgates, RW/RG/GW tap-duals, three Thriving lands (choose-a-color), Cryptic Spires/Crumbling Vestige, plus seven any-color rocks and four green basic-fetch spells. Green fetch (Cultivate/Farseek/etc.) is the backbone — fetch the off-colors you’re missing.
Pilot Notes
- Mulligan for 2-3 fixing sources and a turn-3 Pantlaza line. Without the commander, a lone dino doesn’t discover — Pantlaza is the engine.
- Lead with a high-toughness dino when you want a deep discover; the once-per-turn cap means you only get one discover, so make it count when you have a choice. Looming Altisaur (1/7) is your deepest cheap trigger.
- Hold fight/bite removal until you have a fat body — Bite Down off a 9/9 is unconditional removal.
- Crash Through is your finisher button: cast it pre-combat to give the whole board trample and force lethal through chump blockers (it also replaces itself with a card).
- Save Sulfurous Blast for go-wide aggro tables; your board mostly survives 3 damage.
Weaknesses
- Removal on Pantlaza turns off the engine — you have no common way to protect a legend, only to recast (he gets pricier). Rebuild via raw dino beatdown.
- Flyers / evasion — the deck is mostly ground-pounders; Soaring Sandwing, Imposing Vantasaur, and the Crash Through trample alpha-strike are your only ways over a wall.
- Whiff variance on discover if the top is clogged with lands (it bottoms them, so it self-corrects, but you can miss).
- Only two sweepers and both are small/conditional; a resolved bigger threat can require chump-blocking with dinos.
