Commander (real printed text)
Mathas, Fiend Seeker — Legendary Creature — Vampire (3/3) Menace. At the beginning of your end step, put a bounty counter on target creature an opponent controls. For as long as that creature has a bounty counter on it, it has “When this creature dies, each opponent draws a card and gains 2 life.”
Discrepancy with the assignment (important)
The scout’s blurb claims that when a bounty creature dies, you draw a card and all opponents lose 2 life, and that you should actively kill bounty creatures yourself to convert removal into card draw and life drain. The printed card does the opposite: when a bounty creature dies, each opponent draws a card and gains 2 life. So killing a bounty-tagged creature rewards the rest of the table, not you.
That flips the whole gameplan. Mathas’s bounty is a political deterrent, not a card-draw engine for the controller: nobody wants to kill a tagged creature (it gives its controller’s opponents a free card + 2 life — and the tagged creature’s own controller is one of those “opponents,” so they actually benefit from their tagged creature dying). The practical effect is that the bounty protects the tagged creature from the rest of the table while signaling “leave my board alone.” This deck therefore does not lean on self-killing bounty creatures. It uses Mathas as a menace beater and a soft pillow-fort/politics piece, and wins through an independent Mardu attrition-drain core. Built around the real card.
Gameplan
- Survive early with cheap, dense removal and edicts — keep the board clear and the table low.
- Establish card advantage via the monarch (Palace Sentinels, Thorn of the Black Rose, Crimson Fleet Commodore, Staunch Throneguard) plus black draw spells.
- Grind value off every creature death — Falkenrath Noble drains a life and gains you one on any creature dying, anywhere, which turns my edicts and my two sweepers into table-wide damage.
- Close with repeatable drain: Extort on every spell, Marauding Blight-Priest converting all my lifegain into opponent life loss, and the big drain payoffs (Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Vampire Sovereign).
Key synergy lines
- Falkenrath Noble + sweepers/edicts: Drown in Sorrow, Sulfurous Blast, or Eyeblight Massacre wiping 4–6 creatures drains the table 4–6 with Noble out, while I gain that much life.
- Marauding Blight-Priest + lifegain: every Extort payment, Tithe Drinker/Inspiring Overseer/Vault Skirge lifelink, Bake into a Pie Food, and Noble trigger now also pings each opponent. With both Noble and Blight-Priest out, a single sweep can hit each opponent for a small avalanche.
- Extort engine (Tithe Drinker, Kingpin’s Pet, Syndic of Tithes, Basilica Screecher, Syndicate Enforcer): every spell I cast taxes the table for 1 and refills my life — pure inevitability that also feeds Blight-Priest.
- Monarch loop: Crimson Fleet Commodore / Thorn (deathtouch) / Palace Sentinels keep the crown; if it’s stolen, my removal + evasive extort fliers take it back.
- Recursion grind: Gravedigger and Grim Harvest (Recover) rebuy my best edict-creatures and value bodies, so the attrition never runs dry. Mortuary Mire tops a creature back.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel off a heavy-black devotion board is the haymaker drain finisher; Vampire Sovereign is a smaller evasive repeatable copy.
Role breakdown (actual counts)
- Lands: 37 — heavy fixing for three colors (see manabase note).
- Ramp / fixing rocks: 11 — Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Orzhov/Rakdos/Boros Signets, Commander’s Sphere, Manalith, Mind Stone, Prophetic Prism, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Crystal-tier… (Sol Ring + 5 signet/sphere fixers + Manalith + Mind Stone + Prophetic Prism + Wayfarer’s Bauble). Several double as colored fixing.
- Card advantage: 11 — Sign in Blood, Night’s Whisper, Read the Bones, Costly Plunder, Deadly Dispute, Reckoner’s Bargain, Phyrexian Rager, Inspiring Overseer, Crow of Dark Tidings (mill/filter), plus monarch sources (Palace Sentinels, Thorn of the Black Rose, Crimson Fleet Commodore, Garrulous Sycophant, Staunch Throneguard) and Mind Stone’s late draw.
- Spot removal / interaction: 11 — Diabolic Edict, Cruel Edict, Innocent Blood, Fleshbag Marauder, Demon’s Disciple, Slum Reaper, Vicious Offering, Murder, Cast Down, Vendetta, Disfigure, Feed the Swarm, Bake into a Pie, Terminate, Lightning Strike, Flame Slash, Pillar of Flame, Vanquish the Weak, Last Gasp (deep removal suite, well above 11).
- Mass / pseudo-wipe: 3 — Drown in Sorrow, Sulfurous Blast, Eyeblight Massacre.
- Drain payoffs / wincon engines: Falkenrath Noble, Marauding Blight-Priest, Witty Roastmaster, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Vampire Sovereign, plus the full extort package.
- Rest: evasive bodies / value creatures (Vault Skirge, Mardu Skullhunter, Pulse Tracker, Custodi Squire), recursion (Gravedigger, Grim Harvest).
Manabase / fixing note
37 lands: Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, three guildgates (Boros/Orzhov/Rakdos), three “gain-1” duals (Bloodfell Caves, Wind-Scarred Crag) + Cinder Barrens/Forsaken Sanctuary/Tramway Station/Forum of Amity, three Thriving lands, any-color fixers (Cryptic Spires, Crystal Grotto, Shimmering Grotto, Painted Bluffs, Uncharted Haven), the BRW-fetch Shattered Landscape, Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic/Promising Vein fetches, utility (Mortuary Mire, Bojuka Bog), and 12 basics. With 5 signets/spheres + Manalith + Prophetic Prism + Wayfarer’s Bauble + Command Tower-tier lands, well over 18 fixing sources support the three colors; black is the heaviest pip so basics skew Swamp.
Pilot notes
- Use the bounty politically: tag the scariest opposing creature to make the table reluctant to kill it (or to make its controller wary of attacking, since you’ll likely have an edict ready). Don’t tag a creature you’re about to edict away unless you want to hand the table cards.
- Hold edicts for when an opponent has a single must-answer creature; against go-wide, lead on the sweepers and let Falkenrath Noble convert the wipe into damage.
- Sequence Extort: cast your cheap spell, then float to pay extort — every point matters with Blight-Priest down.
- Gray Merchant wants a black-heavy board; deploy your black permanents before casting it.
Weaknesses
- No hard counterspells / limited instant-speed answers to noncreature threats at common — enchantment/artifact-based combos can slip through (only Feed the Swarm / Deface-tier answers).
- Bounty can backfire diplomatically if you misread the table; it gives card draw + life to opponents on death.
- Grindy clock: the deck relies on incremental drain and can be outraced by an explosive deck before the engine assembles. Sweepers + cheap removal are the bridge.
- Mathas dying repeatedly raises command tax; he’s a 3/3 menace, decent but killable, so don’t over-rely on recasting him.
