Commander
Alesha, Who Smiles at Death — Legendary Creature — Human Warrior (rarity: rare; the 99 are all commons).
First strike. Whenever Alesha attacks, you may pay . If you do, return target creature card with power 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking.
Note: the scout paraphrase was accurate — Alesha returns a power-2-or-less creature each time she attacks, for hybrid . Importantly the cost is hybrid, so a single nonblack/nonwhite source plus a generic doesn’t matter — any two W or B (in any mix) pay it, and the trigger fires every combat. The reanimated body enters tapped and attacking, so it can’t block but it gets there for combat damage and, crucially, fires its ETB again.
Gameplan
A grindy Mardu aristocrats-recursion midrange deck. We flood the board with cheap creatures whose value is front-loaded into an enter-the-battlefield (or dies) trigger — edicts, drains, pingers, card draw — then use sacrifice outlets and natural attrition to dump them into the graveyard. Alesha attacks each turn and loops the best power-≤2 body back, re-triggering its ETB. Over a few turns that’s a relentless stream of edicts, drains, and pings the table can’t keep up with. We don’t need one big swing; we win by inevitability.
Win conditions (explicit)
- Drain loop — Falkenrath Noble, Spirit of Malevolence, Kalastria Healer, Lampad of Death’s Vigil, Tattered Mummy, Cauldron Familiar each ping every opponent when creatures enter or die. Sacrifice a recurred body to Carrion Feeder / Viscera Seer, Alesha brings it back, repeat. With a drain payoff out, every loop is direct table-wide life loss.
- Crypt Rats / repeatable pingers — Crypt Rats is power 2, so Alesha recurs it; for X black mana deals X to each creature and each player — a recurring Pestilence-on-a-stick that doubles as a sweeper and a finisher. Vithian Stinger, Cuombajj Witches, and Skeleton Archer add recurring point damage.
- Evasive grind — once the board is gummed up by repeated edicts, equipped/recurring attackers plus Alesha’s first strike close it out.
Key synergy lines
- Edict loop: Fleshbag Marauder / Accursed Marauder / Demon’s Disciple are all power ≤2. Sac one to Viscera Seer, attack, Alesha returns it tapped-and-attacking, it re-fires “each player sacrifices.” Repeatable removal that strips the best blocker every turn.
- Blink the ETBs: Ephemerate (rebound = two flickers) and Cloudshift re-trigger a Gravedigger, Fleshbag, or drain creature at instant speed — extra value off-curve, and Ephemerate protects Alesha from spot removal.
- Recursion glut: Unearth (also cycles), Stir the Grave (scalable), Recommission, Gravedigger, and Driver of the Dead (dies → reanimate a MV-2-or-less body for free) mean we rebuy threats even when Alesha is dealt with.
- Card-draw on a body: Spirited Companion, Dusk Legion Zealot, Thraben/Novice Inspector all replace themselves and are power ≤2 — Alesha can loop the Inspectors for repeated Clues.
Role breakdown (counts reflect the actual list)
- Lands — 36 (18 nonbasic fixers + 18 basics: 6/6/6).
- Ramp / mana fixing — 9 rocks/ramp: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mardu Banner (all three colors), Commander’s Sphere, Mind Stone, Prophetic Prism, Orzhov Signet, Rakdos Signet, Wayfarer’s Bauble. (Pilgrim’s Eye adds a 10th land-fetch body in the creature slot.)
- Card advantage — 10: Night’s Whisper, Sign in Blood, Read the Bones, Deadly Dispute, Village Rites, Spirited Companion, Dusk Legion Zealot, Thraben Inspector, Novice Inspector, plus Mind Stone/Commander’s Sphere/Prophetic Prism cantrip tails.
- Spot removal / interaction — 9: Bone Splinters, Spark Harvest, Feed the Swarm, Defeat, Last Breath, Journey to Nowhere, plus the repeatable edict bodies (Fleshbag, Accursed Marauder, Demon’s Disciple) and recurring pingers.
- Mass / pseudo-wipe — 4: Drown in Sorrow, Eyeblight Massacre, Sulfurous Blast, Crypt Rats (also a wincon).
- Payoffs / engine — the rest: drain creatures, sac outlets (Carrion Feeder, Viscera Seer), recursion spells, Bonesplitter, Mardu Hordechief, token-makers (Doomed Traveler, Hunted Witness).
Manabase / fixing note
36 lands lean on all three guildgates, six BW/BR/RW common taplands, the three Thriving lands (any-pair fixing), Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic, plus Bojuka Bog and Mortuary Mire utility — about 18 fixing sources across lands plus 9 rocks/ramp (Mardu Banner taps all three) for ~27 colored-fixing sources total, comfortable for a three-color grind deck whose double-pips are the hybrid commander cost.
Pilot notes
- Hold a sac outlet up so an edict/drain creature dies on demand before Alesha’s combat — then loop it.
- Sequence ETBs onto a drain payoff (Falkenrath Noble especially) for maximum life swing per loop.
- Crypt Rats is your reset and your clock; only fire X high enough to clear blockers while you’re winning the life race, or all-in for lethal once opponents are low.
- Alesha’s reanimation targets graveyard creatures — don’t be shy about chump-blocking or sacrificing value bodies; they’re loop fuel, not losses.
Weaknesses
- Graveyard hate shuts off the engine; we mitigate with redundant recursion and bodies that generate value on cast.
- Light on hard answers to big single threats above our removal’s reach (Defeat hits power ≤2, Last Breath power ≤2) — Feed the Swarm and Spark Harvest are the catch-alls.
- Grindy and slow; a fast combo table can outrace the incremental drain. Crypt Rats is the panic button.
