Commander
Flash Thompson, Spider-Fan — Legendary Creature — Human Citizen
Flash — When Flash Thompson enters, choose one or both — • Heckle — Tap target creature. • Hero Worship — Untap target creature.
Discrepancy note vs. the assignment: the scout described Flash as a card that “flashes in” to ambush a blocker — implying the Flash keyword (cast at instant speed). The printed card has no Flash keyword; “Flash” is just the ability’s flavor word. Flash Thompson is a plain sorcery-speed creature whose ETB taps and/or untaps a creature. The deck is built around the REAL ability: a cheap, recastable ETB tapper that we blink and recur to neutralize a fresh attacker (or blocker) every time he re-enters.
Gameplan
A mono-white soft-lock control deck. There are no true board wipes at common in white, so we win through inevitability, not a draw-go-into-wrath plan:
- Lock the board. A dense package of repeatable tappers (Master Decoy, Fan Bearer, Gavony Trapper, Gideon’s Lawkeeper, etc.) plus a wall of “can’t attack or block” auras (Pacifism, Faith’s Fetters, Intercessor’s Arrest, Bound by Moonsilver…) keeps the biggest threats permanently off the table. Each turn our tappers neutralize more attackers than opponents can profitably redeploy.
- Chip + drain for inevitability. Evasive lifelink flyers (Healer’s Hawk, Seraph of Dawn) and Extort drainers (Syndic of Tithes, Basilica Guards) grind every opponent down a little each turn while we stay safe behind the lock. Extort triggers on every spell we cast — and we cast a lot of cheap ones — so the drain compounds. (Basilica Guards is a Defender that only Extorts; Sky Crier flies but is here for its draw activation.)
- Re-tap with the commander. Flash Thompson is a ETB tapper. Cloudshift / Ephemerate / Whitemane Lion blink him to fire Heckle again at instant speed (Ephemerate twice). Hero Worship (untap) also lets us untap our own tappers for a double activation or untap a blocker after combat — a flexible utility mode opponents rarely play around.
Key synergy lines
- Tap, then exile cheaply. Piercing Rays exiles a tapped creature; Ride’s End and Quicksand Whirlpool cost less when targeting a tapped creature, and Banish from Edoras costs less. Our entire tapper suite turns these into 1-3 mana hard exile. Tap with Flash/Master Decoy → exile for a song.
- Mass-tap into a swing or a lock-reset. Ivory Giant (tap all nonwhite creatures) and Dawnglare Invoker (: tap all creatures target player controls) are the pseudo-wipes — they blank a whole opponent’s board for a turn, letting our flyers connect or buying a clean exile window on the tapped-down threats. Note Ivory Giant is a 7-drop hard-cast; its suspend is 5 time counters for , so it is a slow setup play, not an instant reset.
- Blink value. Cloudshift/Ephemerate/Whitemane Lion re-trigger Flash Thompson, Inspiring Overseer (draw + life), Spirited Companion (draw), Helpful Hunter (draw), Kor Hookmaster (tap + don’t-untap), Leonin Snarecaster (tap), and Journey to Nowhere is rebuyable too if needed.
- Cantrip auras. Angelic Gift and Chosen by Heliod replace themselves while suiting up a flyer; Hobble draws AND pacifies; Sky Crier’s symmetric draw keeps gas flowing late.
Role breakdown (with counts)
- Lands — 36: 29 Plains + Ash Barrens, Secluded Steppe, Drifting Meadow, Desert of the True (cycling lands for flood insurance), Kabira Crossroads + Radiant Fountain (incidental life vs. aggro), Sandstone Bridge.
- Ramp — 10: Sol Ring, Mind Stone, Thought Vessel, Prismatic Lens, Guardian Idol, Marble Diamond, Fractured Powerstone, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Star Compass, Expedition Map. (White has no green-style ramp, so we lean on cheap rocks plus a land-fetch to deploy the lock a turn early.)
- Card advantage — 11: Spirited Companion, Helpful Hunter, Inspiring Overseer, Sky Crier, Angelic Gift, Chosen by Heliod, Hobble, Basilica Skullbomb, Candy Trail, Sleeper Dart, Mind Stone (also ramp).
- True exile removal — 8: Journey to Nowhere, Last Breath, Piercing Rays, Ride’s End, Quicksand Whirlpool, Blessed Light, Banish from Edoras, Revoke Existence (artifact/enchantment answer).
- Soft-lock pacify package — 7: Pacifism, Oppressive Rays, Planar Disruption, Bound by Moonsilver, Intercessor’s Arrest, Faith’s Fetters, Shackles. These are the lock engine / wincon enabler rather than clean answers — they keep threats off the table and feed the cost-reduced exile spells. The repeatable tapper suite layers on top as additional soft interaction.
- Mass / pseudo-wipe — 2: Ivory Giant, Dawnglare Invoker.
- Win condition / payoffs: Evasive lifelink/flying threats (Healer’s Hawk, Seraph of Dawn, Battlefield Raptor, Lantern Kami, Kitesail Scout, Faerie Guidemother, Inspiring Overseer, plus evasion granted by Angelic Gift) + Extort drain (Syndic of Tithes). Sky Crier is a flyer too but its main job is the card-draw activation; Basilica Guards is a Defender wall that Extorts but does not attack.
- Repeatable tappers (the engine): Akroan Jailer, Gideon’s Lawkeeper, Goldmeadow Harrier, Master Decoy, Fan Bearer, Gavony Trapper, Benalish Trapper, Blinding Mage, Law-Rune Enforcer, Stern Constable, Kor Hookmaster, Dromoka Dunecaster, Leonin Snarecaster, Leonin Bola.
Win condition (one line)
Lock the board with tappers + pacify auras, then grind every opponent out with evasive lifelink flyers and repeatable Extort drain while exiling anything dangerous the moment it’s tapped.
Pilot notes
- Mulligan for a rock or a 1-drop tapper plus a pacify aura. You want to be locking the strongest deck’s best creature by turn 2-3.
- Hold Flash Thompson as a re-usable Heckle when you have a blink spell up, rather than dumping him turn 2 with no follow-up. Hero Worship (untap) is great after combat to untap a tapper for a second activation.
- Sequence exile around taps: tap a fattie with Gideon’s Lawkeeper (), then Ride’s End for (vs ). Massive tempo.
- Ivory Giant is a slow pseudo-wipe — suspend it early for (5 time counters, so plan ~5 turns ahead) when you’re stable, or hard-cast it at when you need the tap-all now.
- Extort everything. Almost every spell is cheap; leave up to drain when you can.
Weaknesses
- No true wrath. A single resolved huge/hexproof threat or a go-wide token deck can outrun the one-target-at-a-time lock; Ivory Giant/Dawnglare Invoker only buy a turn. Lean on exile removal for the scariest single threat.
- Enchantment removal hurts — much of our interaction is auras; a green/white opponent with mass disenchant can unlock the board. Spread threats across tappers (permanents that aren’t auras) to hedge.
- Mono-white card flow is the usual weak point; we mitigate with 10 draw sources and cycling lands but can still run low late vs. a grind.
- Slow clock. Win is incremental (flyers + drain). Against fast combo we are the control deck without counterspells — exile the combo piece on sight and race with the lock.
