Gadwick, the Wizened, Legendary Creature — Human Wizard

When Gadwick enters, draw X cards. Whenever you cast a blue spell, tap target nonland permanent an opponent controls.

The scout’s paraphrase is accurate. Gadwick has two abilities and both matter:

  1. ETB: draw X. Cast him for late and refill your hand — a one-card reset that refuels the control shell. He can also be recast from the command zone repeatedly.
  2. Cast-trigger: every blue spell taps an opponent’s nonland permanent. This is the engine. In a deck stuffed with one-mana blue cantrips, counters, bounce, and freeze, each spell you cast also taps down a blocker, an attacker, or a mana rock. It is a rolling soft-Stasis that keeps the table off-balance while you grind.

Gameplan

Mono-blue has no board wipes, so this is inevitability control, not draw-go-into-wrath. The win plan is a repeatable pinger + evasive beater grind:

  • Tap lock (Gadwick + freeze). Almost every card in the deck is a blue spell, so casting anything taps an opponent permanent via Gadwick. On top of that, a dense package of “doesn’t untap” auras (Claustrophobia, Mystic Restraints, Waterknot, Capture Sphere, Mesmerizing Dose) and ETB-tappers (Frost Lynx, Frost Trickster, Watertrap Weaver, Chillbringer) keeps the scariest threat locked permanently.
  • Pinger inevitability. Prodigal Sorcerer, Rootwater Hunter, Zuran Spellcaster, Thornwind Faeries (flying) and Stinging Barrier are : deal 1 to any target. With Gadwick keeping blockers tapped and counters protecting them, these slowly pick off creatures and chip the table. Viridian Longbow, Hermetic Study, and Psionic Gift turn ANY creature (including an unblockable one) into another pinger.
  • Evasive clock + card engine. Unblockable bodies (Mist-Cloaked Herald, Slither Blade, Triton Shorestalker, Phantom Warrior, Blighted Agent, Cephalid Pathmage) carry card-draw auras (Ophidian Eye, Cartouche of Knowledge, Stratus Walk, Fate Foretold) and pair with Tandem Lookout, turning every connection into card advantage that buries the table. Ophidian Eye on an unblockable creature is a near-unkillable draw engine.

Key synergy lines

  • Gadwick + cheap cantrip. Cast Opt/Consider/Brainstorm/Ponder — draw/dig AND tap an opponent’s blocker for free. The spells that fuel your control plan ARE your removal-lite.
  • Ophidian Eye / Tandem Lookout + Mist-Cloaked Herald. Unblockable + “draw on combat damage” = a card every turn that no removal-light table can stop.
  • Hermetic Study / Viridian Longbow on a pinger or unblockable creature. Doubles your ping output; a single evasive creature becomes both a clock and a removal turret.
  • Freeze lock + pingers. Tap their best blocker down with Mystic Restraints, then swing in with your unblockables while pingers clear small blockers. The opponent never untaps the wall.
  • Counter wall. 8 hard/soft counters protect the lock and the pingers from sweepers and threats; each counter also taps a permanent via Gadwick.

  • Ramp — 10: Sol Ring, Mind Stone, Arcane Signet, Prophetic Prism, Star Compass, Prismatic Lens, Mana Geode, Thought Vessel, Commander’s Sphere, Sky Diamond.
  • Card advantage — 10: Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Serum Visions, Omen of the Sea, Font of Fortunes, Tandem Lookout, Aether Spellbomb (+ Gadwick’s own ETB draw X, + the draw auras Ophidian Eye / Cartouche / Stratus Walk / Fate Foretold).
  • Spot removal / interaction — 11+: Counters: Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Mana Leak, Negate, Disdainful Stroke, Exclude, Dissolve, Muddle the Mixture (8). Hard removal: Ravenform (exile). Tempo bounce: Repeal, Into the Roil, Blink of an Eye, Man-o’-War, Aether Adept. Pingers double as repeatable removal.
  • Mass/pseudo-wipe — 0: Mono-blue has no commons that wipe. Compensation: extra counters, the freeze lock, repeatable pinger removal, and an evasive inevitability clock substitute for a wrath.
  • Freeze / tap-down lock — 11: Frost Lynx, Frost Trickster, Watertrap Weaver, Chillbringer, Claustrophobia, Mystic Restraints, Waterknot, Mesmerizing Dose, Capture Sphere (+ Skyline Cascade land).

Curve is low: the bulk of the deck is 1–3 MV, with Gadwick scalable as the only “big” play.

Win condition

Inevitability via repeatable pingers + an evasive, card-drawing clock. Lock the table’s relevant permanents tapped (Gadwick + freeze), grind their board to zero with : deal-1 pingers, and close with unblockable creatures wearing Ophidian Eye / pinger auras while counters protect the lock. Games end with the opponents drawing dead under a soft-Stasis they can’t break.

Pilot notes

  • Don’t over-commit into open mana. Hold counters; you have 8 plus Gadwick taps. Deploy threats when you can protect them.
  • Sequence spells to maximize Gadwick taps. With Gadwick out, fire cheap cantrips during opponents’ end steps to tap down their would-be attackers before their turn, or tap blockers before you swing.
  • Aura targets: put Ophidian Eye / Hermetic Study on an UNBLOCKABLE creature (Mist-Cloaked Herald, Slither Blade) so the engine can’t be chump-blocked or profitably removed in combat.
  • Cast Gadwick for big X only when you can untap with protection up, or as a hand-refill when stabilized.
  • Frost effects are best aimed at the biggest blocker so your unblockables and pingers can operate freely.

Weaknesses

  • No board wipe. A wide go-wide deck can outpace single-target tappers; lean on counters early and pinger-clear the small stuff.
  • Enchantment/artifact removal in blue commons is thin beyond bounce — recurring problem permanents must be answered with counters on the stack.
  • Slow clock. This is a grind deck; against fast combo you must counter the combo piece rather than race.
  • Aura-based engines are 2-for-1 risk if the creature is bounced/killed in response; protect with counters or use Ophidian Eye on hexproof-ish (unblockable, low-priority) bodies.
