Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer — Legendary Creature — Monkey Pirate Whenever Ragavan deals combat damage to a player, create a Treasure token and exile the top card of that player’s library. Until end of turn, you may cast that card. Dash (You may cast this spell for its dash cost. If you do, it gains haste, and it’s returned from the battlefield to its owner’s hand at the beginning of the next end step.)
The scout paraphrase was accurate: a one-mana evasive-by-speed threat that, on combat connect, makes a Treasure (ramp) AND steals/casts the top card of the player it hit (card advantage off opponents’ decks). Dash lets you redeploy it to dodge sorcery-speed removal and re-trigger haste. Printed text confirmed — commander_oracle_ok = true.
Gameplan
This is a low-to-the-ground mono-red tempo deck that out-grinds other red lists through impulse draw — repeatedly exiling the top of your own library and getting to play it. Ragavan himself adds a second card-advantage axis by exiling off opponents’ libraries on connect, plus a Treasure every time he hits.
- Turn 1: Ragavan (or dash later). One-drop evasive beaters: Goldhound, Goblin Tomb Raider, Monastery Swiftspear, Fanatical Firebrand.
- Early game: Connect with small evasive threats, generate Treasure, and chain impulse-draw (Reckless Impulse, Wrenn’s Resolve, Experimental Synthesizer) so you never run out of gas.
- Mid game: Treasure acceleration powers out multiple spells per turn. Burn doubles as removal for blockers and reach to the face.
- Close: Recurring chip damage + a burn cluster (Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lava Spike, Goblin Grenade) and scalable X-burn (Disintegrate, Kaervek’s Torch, Lava Burst) finish the table. Treasure makes the X-spells huge.
Inevitability note: In a four-player pod a single mono-red beater can’t race three opponents on combat alone, so the deck wins by converting its impulse-draw card surplus into a burn-to-face finish. Treasure fuels both extra spells and the X-burn finishers, which is the deck’s true closing engine.
Win Condition
Explicit wincon: Chip damage from evasive one/two-drops (Treasure-fueled, with Ragavan stealing cards on connect) into a direct-burn finish — clustered face burn (Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lava Spike, Goblin War-tier reach) and Treasure-pumped X-spells (Disintegrate / Kaervek’s Torch / Lava Burst) for the last several points across the table.
Role Breakdown (counts)
- Lands: 36 — 33 Mountain + Ash Barrens (fixing/landcycle), Forgotten Cave (cycling), Sunscorched Desert (incidental reach).
- Ramp (Treasure / mana accel): 10 — Plundering Pirate, Redcap Thief, Brazen Freebooter, Patron of the Arts, Meticulous Artisan, Goblin Glasswright // Craft with Pride, Young Red Dragon // Bathe in Gold, Grabby Giant // That’s Mine, Stark Industries Executive, Gold Pan. (Kept at 10 to respect the HARD ramp cap — Ragavan, Goldhound, Reckless Lackey, Impulsive Pilferer add more incidental Treasure on top without being counted, so true acceleration density is healthy but not bloated.)
- Card advantage / impulse draw: 11 — Experimental Synthesizer, Reckless Impulse, Wrenn’s Resolve, Blazing Crescendo, Galvanic Relay, Seize Opportunity, Seize the Spoils, Big Score, Faithless Looting, Alania’s Pathmaker, Crimson Operative. (Clockwork Percussionist, Irascible Wolverine, Dark-Dweller Oracle, Chase Stein add still more impulse as creatures.)
- Spot removal / interaction: 10 — Lightning Bolt, Shock, Galvanic Blast, Burst Lightning, Firebolt, Pillar of Flame, Magma Spray, Abrade, Flame Slash, Explosive Shot. (Most also go face as reach.)
- Mass / pseudo-wipe: 4 — Tectonic Hazard, Blazing Volley, Scouring Sands, Yamabushi’s Storm (plus Cosmotronic Wave as a one-sided sweeper + alpha-strike enabler).
- Evasive bodies / payoffs / equipment: Ragavan, Impulsive Pilferer, Reckless Lackey, Goldhound, Goblin Tomb Raider, Fanatical Firebrand, Monastery Swiftspear, Sawblade Scamp, Impetuous Sunchaser, Sticky Fingers, Prying Blade, Goldvein Pick, Vault Robber, Gilded Ghoda, Banners Raised.
- Reach / finishers: Chain Lightning, Lava Spike, Collateral Damage, Reckless Abandon, Goblin Grenade, Disintegrate, Kaervek’s Torch, Lava Burst, Flame Jet.
Curve: Heavily ≤4 MV. Almost every card is 1–3 mana; the only top-end is the scalable X-burn, which is intentionally flexible.
Pilot Notes
- Lead with evasion, not just Ragavan. Goldhound (menace), Goblin Tomb Raider (haste w/ an artifact — Treasures count), and Monastery Swiftspear all connect early. Equip Prying Blade / Goldvein Pick / Sticky Fingers onto an evasive body to snowball Treasure off combat damage.
- Dash Ragavan when an opponent holds up removal or to re-enable haste after a board reset. Dashing also dodges sorcery-speed sweepers on your end step.
- Sequence impulse draw around Treasure. Impulse-exiled cards expire — make Treasure first (or hold one up) so you can actually cast what you flip. Reckless Impulse / Wrenn’s Resolve into a Treasure is two extra spells in a turn.
- Burn discipline: early game, kill the scariest blocker or a rival commander; late game, hoard burn for the face. Prowess on Swiftspear / Crimson Operative / Meticulous Artisan turns each spell into extra combat damage.
- X-burn is your “real” finisher. Float Treasure before casting Disintegrate / Kaervek’s Torch / Lava Burst to make X enormous for the kill.
- Cosmotronic Wave / Hazardous-style sweepers are alpha-strike enablers — your opponents’ blockers can’t block, turning a wide-ish board into lethal.
Weaknesses
- Lifegain and fog effects blunt the burn-to-face plan; you may need to grind harder with Ragavan’s card theft.
- Sweepers / mass removal hit you hard as a creature-reliant deck — dash Ragavan and rebuild from impulse-draw card flow; keep some threats in hand.
- Three-opponent math: a single beater can’t race a full pod, so you depend on converting card surplus to reach. Against very fast combo you can be too slow without a strong opening.
- No counterspells (mono-red): you interact reactively only through burn; you can’t stop noncreature wins (big-mana ramp, combo) except by racing them.
- Treasure reliance: artifact hate (uncommon at common) or a slow draw of accelerants can leave the X-burn finish short.
