Krenko, Baron of Tin Street — Legendary Creature — Goblin (3/3)

Haste , Sacrifice an artifact: Put a +1/+1 counter on each Goblin you control. Whenever an artifact is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may pay . If you do, create a 1/1 red Goblin creature token. It gains haste until end of turn.

The scout paraphrase matched the printed card — no conflict. commander_oracle_ok = true.

Two intertwined engines:

  1. Pump: tap + sac an artifact to put a +1/+1 counter on EVERY Goblin you control. With a wide board this is a board-wide anthem each turn.
  2. Recursion: every time any artifact you control dies (the Treasure/Clue/etc you just sacked, an artifact creature, a cracked rock), you may pay to spawn a hasty 1/1 Goblin. That new Goblin is itself a future pump target — and feeds the aristocrat drains below.

The loop: make artifact tokens → sac an artifact to Krenko (pump the team) → the dying artifact triggers the second ability → pay for a hasty Goblin → repeat. Each artifact death is also a damage trigger off the aristocrat package.

Gameplan / Wincon

Explicit win condition: a go-wide Goblin board that Krenko repeatedly pumps into lethal combat damage, backstopped by aristocrat drain (Impact Tremors / Reckless Fireweaver / Molten Gatekeeper / Witty Roastmaster) turning every token and artifact ETB into direct damage. In grindy games you win without ever attacking by chaining artifact deaths into Krenko Goblins + drain pings.

  • Early: ramp into Krenko on turn 3, develop cheap Goblin makers and the artifact-token shell.
  • Mid: deploy a drain payoff, start tapping Krenko each turn for a board-wide +1/+1 anthem. Sac outlets (Ashnod’s Altar, Skirk Prospector) refuel mana for the recursion taxes.
  • Late / inevitability: a single Ashnod’s Altar + a Krenko + any artifact-token producer means each token you sac pumps the team AND (paying ) makes another Goblin AND pings every opponent off Impact Tremors / Reckless Fireweaver. That is the inevitability engine; even through a wrath you rebuild instantly off token producers.

  • Mass / pseudo-wipe: 4 — Blazing Volley, Boiling Earth, Cosmotronic Wave (all one-sided “each creature your opponents control”), Krark-Clan Shaman (repeatable sac-an-artifact sweeper of non-fliers; only hits their non-fliers if you keep your team off the ground, but mainly used asymmetrically when ahead on board).

Note on wipes: as a go-wide aggro/aristocrats deck the one-sided red sweepers (Blazing Volley/Boiling Earth/Cosmotronic Wave) wreck opposing token/x-1 boards while leaving your Goblins intact, which is exactly what this archetype wants. Krark-Clan Shaman is a tax-able repeatable mini-wipe.

Pilot notes

  • Sequencing the loop: resolve a drain payoff (Impact Tremors etc.) before you start sacrificing, so every Krenko-spawned Goblin and every cracked artifact converts to damage.
  • Ashnod’s Altar is the centerpiece. Sac an artifact creature/token to Altar for ; that artifact death triggers Krenko’s -for-a-Goblin; the new Goblin can be sacked again. With a free artifact-token producer on board this is large amounts of mana, Goblins, and drain.
  • Hold up during your sac turns — Krenko’s recursion is optional and costs each. Skirk Prospector / Krark-Clan Stoker convert Goblins/artifacts back into red mana to keep paying.
  • Krenko’s pump uses the tap symbol — he can only pump once per turn unless untapped, so prioritize widening the board before tapping him.
  • Cycling lands (Forgotten Cave, Smoldering Crater) and the looters keep you from flooding; pitch excess lands to Demand Answers / Seize the Spoils / Big Score.

Weaknesses

  • Graveyard hate / artifact hate slows the artifact-death engine, though Goblin token makers keep a backup beatdown plan.
  • Sweepers that hit your own board (you have no protection beyond rebuild speed) — mitigated by cheap token producers and instant-speed rebuilders, but a well-timed enemy wrath sets you back.
  • Lifegain decks can outpace the drain pings; lean on combat + Krenko’s anthem to close instead.
  • No counterspells / limited stack interaction (mono-red commons) — removal is all burn, so resolved enchantments/planeswalkers outside burn range are awkward.
