Commander
Mikey & Leo, Chaos & Order — Legendary Creature — Mutant Ninja Turtle
Whenever you put a counter on a creature you control, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.
Real printed text confirmed via the CLI (--full-text). The scout’s paraphrase was accurate in spirit but undersold two things: (1) it’s a counter of any kind, not just +1/+1 — so spore counters, credit counters, modular, graft, fade, etc. all trigger it; (2) it’s a hard once per turn cap, so the deck is not trying to chain counters in a single turn — it’s trying to guarantee at least one counter lands every single turn, every turn, forever. That reframes the build: I want cheap, redundant, and ideally self-sustaining counter sources so the free draw is never missed, rather than explosive multi-counter turns (which are wasted on the cap).
Gameplan
Selesnya go-tall-and-wide that turns a +1/+1 counters board into a card-advantage machine. The commander makes every counter-placement replace itself, so the deck out-grinds the table while building lethal, trampling, deathtouch-having, first-striking creatures.
- Early: mana dorks into the commander (a 2-drop) or into cheap ETB-counter creatures. The first counter each turn cantrips.
- Mid: repeatable counter engines (outlast creatures, Forced Adaptation / Primal Cocoon auras, adapt creatures) guarantee the draw with zero cards spent. Mass-pumps (Travel Preparations, Inspiring Roar, support spells) snowball the board AND trigger draw.
- Late (inevitability): the “each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter has [keyword]” lords stack trample (Crowned Ceratok, Pridemalkin, Duskshell Crawler, Tuskguard Captain), first strike (Ainok Bond-Kin), and deathtouch (Bushmaster, Coiled Henchman) onto a counter-laden board. Since virtually every creature here ends up with a counter, one alpha strike is lethal and unblockable-in-practice (deathtouch + trample forces chumps to fail).
Why this wins without board wipes
WG has no true board wipe at common — the color pair only offers enchantment/artifact removal. Per the rubric, I compensate with (a) a deep spot-removal + fight suite (10 pieces) and (b) an explicit inevitability plan: the commander is a card-advantage lock. Every turn I draw an extra card off a free counter while the board grows. I bury opponents on resources, then the keyword-lord package converts the oversized board into a single lethal, near-unblockable swing. Fights (Prizefight, Pounce, Prey Upon, Titanic Brawl, Mutant’s Prey) double as removal because my creatures are oversized counter-stacks.
Key synergy lines
- Self-sustaining draw (no cards spent): Forced Adaptation / Primal Cocoon on any creature → at the beginning of every upkeep a +1/+1 counter lands → free draw, forever. Outlast creatures (Ainok Bond-Kin, Tuskguard Captain, Salt Road Patrol, Longshot Squad) tap each turn as a sorcery to add a counter → free draw without spending a card.
- Spore/fade/graft = counters too: because the trigger is “a counter,” Basking Broodscale’s adapt, Servant of the Scale, and Martyr-style proliferate all feed it.
- Proliferate amplifiers: Courage in Crisis, Pollenbright Druid, Martyr for the Cause add a counter (= draw) and grow the whole modified board.
- Mass pump = draw + snowball: Travel Preparations (with flashback), Inspiring Roar, Lifecrafter’s Gift, the support spells (Lead by Example, Shoulder to Shoulder, Relief Captain, Saddleback Lagac) each trigger the once-per-turn draw and widen the lethal keyword board.
- Lethal stack: Crowned Ceratok + Pridemalkin + Duskshell Crawler = trample on everything with a counter; Bushmaster = deathtouch on everything with a counter; Ainok Bond-Kin = first strike. Deathtouch + trample means even a 2/2 with a counter punches through any blocker.
Role breakdown (with counts)
- Lands: 36 — 6 GW dual/utility lands (Selesnya Guildgate, Blossoming Sands, Radiant Grove, Arctic Treeline, Botanical Plaza, Kyoshi Village) + 15 Forest + 15 Plains. Botanical Plaza and Kyoshi Village double as late-game card draw.
- Ramp: 10 — Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Avacyn’s Pilgrim, Boreal Druid, Leaf Gilder, Druid of the Cowl, Abundant Growth, Attune with Aether, Explore.
- Card advantage: 10 — Adventure Awaits, Roots of Wisdom, Elven Farsight, Frog Tongue, Angelic Gift, Oracle’s Restoration, Shoulder to Shoulder, Courage in Crisis, Contagious Vorrac, Evolution Witness. (This is on top of the commander’s repeatable once-per-turn draw, which is the real engine.)
- Spot removal / interaction: 10 — Journey to Nowhere, Last Breath, Destroy Evil, Reprisal, Plummet (flyer answer), Prizefight, Pounce, Prey Upon, Titanic Brawl, Mutant’s Prey (fights leveraged by oversized counter-creatures).
- Mass / pseudo-wipe: 0 (color limitation — see “Why this wins without board wipes”). Compensated with the extra interaction count + inevitability lock.
- Counter engine enablers + payoffs/finishers: ~30 — ETB-counter creatures, outlast/adapt repeatable sources, the keyword lords, and mass-pump payoffs that execute the archetype.
Curve is mostly ≤4 MV; the top end (Crowned Ceratok, Relief Captain, Felidar Savior, Inspiring Roar, Lifecrafter’s Gift) is all impactful counter payoff.
Pilot notes
- Mulligan for a counter source + a dork or land. You want the engine online by turn 3–4. A hand with Forced Adaptation or an outlast creature is gold — it locks in the per-turn draw with no further investment.
- Sequence the once-per-turn cap. Don’t waste a big mass-pump on a turn an outlast/aura already triggered the draw — save the multi-counter spells for board development and let the free upkeep/outlast counters bank the card. Conversely, on a turn with no passive counter, make sure to place at least one.
- Hold fights as removal. Your creatures get huge; Prey Upon / Pounce / Prizefight kill almost anything for one mana once a counter or two has landed. Mutant’s Prey and Titanic Brawl reward already-countered creatures.
- Win by stacking keywords. Once two-plus lords are out, swing wide — deathtouch + trample (Bushmaster + Ceratok) is the kill button; opponents can’t profitably block.
Weaknesses
- No board wipe. A faster aggressive or go-wide opponent can race before the engine stabilizes; you lean on spot removal and fights, which trade 1-for-1. Sweepers from opponents hurt — your board is your win, so a Wrath sets you back hard (mitigated by the card-advantage refill).
- Removal-light against artifacts/planeswalkers. Destroy Evil and Conclave-style answers cover enchantments; PW pressure is awkward beyond attacking them.
- Aura/enchantment-reliant pieces (Forced Adaptation, Primal Cocoon, Frog Tongue, Angelic Gift) carry 2-for-1 risk if the host creature is killed in response.
- Once-per-turn cap means raw counter volume doesn’t accelerate draw — the value is consistency, not bursts.
