Commander — the REAL card

Vito, Fanatic of Aclazotz — Legendary Creature — Vampire Demon Flying. Whenever you sacrifice another permanent, you gain 2 life if this is the first time this ability has resolved this turn. If it’s the second time, each opponent loses 2 life. If it’s the third time, create a 4/3 white and black Vampire Demon creature token with flying.

Scout discrepancy (important): the assignment described Vito as a “lifegain-to-drain converter” that flips a banked life total into table-wide loss, leaning on Marauding Blight-Priest / Epicure of Blood lifegain payoffs. The printed card does none of that. Vito is a sacrifice engine: every sacrifice you make is one tick on a per-turn counter — 1st sac = +2 life, 2nd sac = each opponent loses 2, 3rd sac = a 4/3 flyer. So this is an aristocrats / sac-fodder deck, not a lifelink deck. I built around the real ability: jam cheap fodder, sacrifice it repeatedly each turn, and the second+ sacrifice of every turn drains the whole table for 2 while spinning out demons.

Gameplan

  1. Early: ramp into Vito on turn 3-4 behind cheap fodder and removal. Stabilize with edicts and -X/-X effects.
  2. Mid: deploy a free/cheap sac outlet (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Nantuko Husk, etc.) and a recurring fodder source. Every turn, sac twice+ — first sac pads life, second drains each opponent for 2, third drops a 4/3 flyer.
  3. Inevitability: the engine is the Cauldron Familiar + Food loop. Sac a Food → Cat returns from the yard (each opponent loses 1, you gain 1) → sac the Cat itself → that’s two Vito triggers (drain 2) plus the Cat’s ETB drain. With any Food source online and mana, this is a repeatable table drain every turn. Persistent Specimen, Doomed Traveler, Hunted Witness, Garrison Cat, and Voracious Vermin give a steady stream of bodies to feed Vito’s counter without losing card economy.

Because commons have no true Blood Artist, the drain inevitability lives in Vito’s own 2nd-trigger plus a stack of repeatable sac-drains: Lampad of Death’s Vigil, Gnawing Zombie, Dreg Recycler, Kalastria Healer (rally), Vampire Neonate. Stack two of those under Vito and each sacrifice hits the table from three angles at once.

Key synergy lines

  • Vito double-tap: any free sac outlet + two pieces of fodder = gain 2, then drain the table for 2, every single turn. Add a third sac (recursion) and you also get a 4/3 flyer.
  • Cauldron loop: Blood Fountain / City-style Food + Cauldron Familiar = repeatable drain that also feeds Vito’s counter to the 2nd/3rd tick.
  • Mortician Beetle grows a +1/+1 counter on every sacrifice (yours or opponents’), turning the engine into a clock by itself.
  • Sac-for-value spells (Village Rites, Deadly Dispute, Costly Plunder, Altar’s Reap, Reckoner’s Bargain) double as Vito triggers AND card draw — sacrificing in response to removal turns a 2-for-1 into card advantage plus a drain.
  • Death-drain bodies (Spirit of Malevolence, Tattered Mummy, Blistergrub, Etched Familiar, Nocturnal Feeder) are fodder that also drains when it dies — every one you feed to an outlet is extra reach.
  • Edicts + exploit (Diabolic Edict, Accursed Centaur, Abyssal Gatekeeper, Qarsi Sadist, Vulturous Aven) double as removal and self-sacrifice triggers.

Role breakdown (with counts)

  • Lands — 37 (12 nonbasic incl. 6 WB duals + fixing, 13 Swamp, 12 Plains)
  • Ramp — 10: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Orzhov Cluestone, Guardian Idol, Mind Stone, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Everflowing Chalice, Star Compass, Prophetic Prism, Marble Diamond
  • Card advantage — 9: Village Rites, Deadly Dispute, Costly Plunder, Altar’s Reap, Reckoner’s Bargain, Night’s Whisper, Read the Bones, Sign in Blood, Foreboding Fruit
  • Spot removal / interaction — 9: Moment of Craving, Bake into a Pie, Vanquish the Weak, Murderous Compulsion, Bone Splinters, Spark Harvest, Diabolic Edict, Disfigure, Tragic Slip
  • Pseudo-wipes — 2: Drown in Sorrow, Nausea (both also kill your own tokens to feed Vito)
  • Sac outlets (free/cheap, repeatable) — 6: Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Nantuko Husk, Lampad of Death’s Vigil, Gnawing Zombie, Dreg Recycler
  • Recurring fodder / tokens — ~9: Cauldron Familiar, Persistent Specimen, Doomed Traveler, Hunted Witness, Garrison Cat, Mintstrosity, Voracious Vermin, Myr Moonvessel, Blood Fountain (Food)
  • Drain payoffs — ~9: Spirit of Malevolence, Tattered Mummy, Blistergrub, Etched Familiar, Nocturnal Feeder, Kalastria Healer, Vampire Neonate, Mortician Beetle, Feign Death (recursion enabler)
  • Edict/exploit removal-fodder — 4: Accursed Centaur, Abyssal Gatekeeper, Qarsi Sadist, Vulturous Aven
  • Recursion enablers — 3: Feign Death, Not Dead After All, Kaya’s Ghostform

Pilot notes

  • Order your sacrifices. The first sac of a turn only gains you life — if you’re stable, sac your worst fodder first so the 2nd+ (the drain) lands on the table. If you’re being raced, the +2 life buffer matters; don’t waste it.
  • Hold a sac outlet up as removal insurance: in response to targeted removal, sac the threatened creature for value (Village Rites / Deadly Dispute) — you keep card parity and bank a Vito trigger.
  • Three sacs = a 4/3 flyer. With Cauldron + a Food + a free outlet you can routinely hit the 3rd tick; the demon tokens close games on their own and are extra future fodder.
  • Drown in Sorrow / Nausea are bidirectional: cast them when the board is wide, and your dying tokens still feed death-drain payoffs (Spirit of Malevolence, Tattered Mummy).

Weaknesses

  • No real Blood Artist in commons — drain per-death is weaker than a tuned aristocrats deck; reach comes from Vito’s 2nd trigger and a handful of repeatable sac-drains, so removing Vito slows the clock a lot. Mitigated by Lampad/Gnawing Zombie/Dreg Recycler as backup drains and by recasting Vito.
  • Grindy and slow. Fast combo or wide aggro that goes under the stabilization shell can race the early turns before the engine is online.
  • Graveyard hate hurts the Cauldron/Persistent Specimen loops; fall back on hand-based fodder and tokens.

Win condition

Repeatable table-wide drain: chain two-plus sacrifices each turn so Vito’s 2nd trigger drains every opponent for 2, backed by Lampad / Gnawing Zombie / Dreg Recycler / Kalastria Healer and the Cauldron Familiar Food loop, with 4/3 demon tokens (3rd trigger) as a closing beatdown.
