Cards
Gameplan
- Early (T1-5): Ramp into rocks, hold up cheap removal, draw cards. Use the dense burn/edict suite to keep the board empty and your life total safe. This is a draw-go shell until Kaervek lands.
- Mid (T6-8): Deploy Kaervek. Now the table is taxed — anybody untapping for a real spell eats damage equal to its MV, and you choose where it lands. Pair him with Pestilence / Crypt Rats so you also threaten to wrath at instant speed.
- Inevitability (the win): You do NOT draw-go into a wrath and hope. You grind:
- Repeatable pingers untap every turn and chip faces / kill x/1s: Cuombajj Witches, Prodigal Pyromancer, Goblin Fireslinger, Rakdos Ickspitter, Thermo-Alchemist.
- Spell-cast payoffs punish your own removal-heavy deck: Guttersnipe (2 to each opp per instant/sorcery), Firebrand Archer (1 per noncreature spell), Thermo-Alchemist (untaps + pings).
- Pestilence / Crypt Rats are repeatable table-wide damage that double as wraths and as a direct life-total clock.
- Kaervek himself taxes every opponent cast for the rest of the game.
- Burn finish: once the table is low from all of the above, a handful of bolts close it out.
Key synergy lines
- Kaervek + open removal: leave up Lightning Bolt / Terminate. Opponent casts a 5-drop → Kaervek deals 5 to it (or its caster), you Bolt the leftover. One creature, two answers, zero cards if they cast into it.
- Kaervek + Pestilence: Pestilence pings the board to clear x/1–x/3s; Kaervek taxes anyone trying to rebuild. Against go-wide, Crypt Rats empties the board for black mana.
- Guttersnipe / Firebrand Archer + the burn pile: every removal spell you fire also drains all opponents. With ~17 instants/sorceries plus pingers, the table bleeds passively.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel as a midgame swing — high black devotion from all the pips drains the whole table and gains it back; recur it with Gravedigger / Unearth / Raise Dead / Macabre Waltz.
- Marauding Blight-Priest + lifegain (Gray Merchant, Bake into a Pie, tapland gains) converts incidental lifegain into table-wide drain.
- Edicts vs. hexproof/big threats: Cruel Edict, Innocent Blood, Diabolic Edict, Geth’s Verdict, Fleshbag Marauder, Slum Reaper, Vraska’s Fall — answers for what you can’t target.

Win condition (one line)
Grind the table out with repeatable pingers + Pestilence/Crypt Rats + Guttersnipe/Firebrand drain while Kaervek taxes every opponent cast, then close with direct burn.
Pilot notes
- Mulligan for ramp + an early interactive spell. You want to be casting removal on curve and land Kaervek around T6.
- Hold removal until opponents commit, and remember Kaervek lets you choose the target — frequently you want the damage on a player’s face or on the spell’s own caster, not on a creature.
- Sequence pingers before combat-relevant turns so they’re online to mop up tokens / mana dorks.
- Crypt Rats / Pestilence will hurt YOU too — gain back with Gray Merchant / lifegain lands, and only fire them when you net ahead.
- Don’t over-deploy creatures into open mana from blue players; this is a reactive deck, win the long game.
Weaknesses
- No counterspells at common — fast combo can outrace you; lean on edicts and burn to disrupt key pieces and on Kaervek taxing their setup.
- Commander is 7 MV and fragile (5/4) — gets bolted/edicted easily; the deck must function as draw-go even without him.
- Lifegain-light beyond a few sources; Pestilence/Crypt Rats and shocklands tax your own life, so racing aggressive decks can be tight.
- Enchantment/artifact removal is thin at common in BR — problematic permanents (e.g., big enchantments) can stick.
